Don’t sacrifice justice for expedition – Tsatsu Tsikata to SC

The Lead Counsel for John Dramani Mahama (the Petitioner), in the ongoing 2020 election petition at the Supreme Court of Ghana has asked the apex court not to sacrifice justice for expedition.

The experienced lawyer who felt that the case was being rushed by the Judges sought to challenge the timelines designed for the hearing of the case.

“The timeline that is provided for us to have witness statements does not seem to be justified… I do know about the schedule provided, but I also know that your Lordships are here to administer justice and that justice should not be sacrificed for expedition,”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team had fresh application filed for a review of the court’s January 19, 2021 ruling on their interrogatories as part of other outstanding issues they wanted to be factored in the timelines.

One of the Judges, Justice Yaw Appau shared an opposing view; insisting the application for a review of the court’s judgement on the interrogatories of the petitioner does not amount to a stay of execution hence the case can still go on without a decision from the requested review.

The court has then adjourned to Tuesday, January 26, 2021 for the case to continue.
