Nine BECE candidates die in Oti River

At least nine Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates have died by drowning after the boat they were traveling on capsized on River Oti Friday.

A report by indicates the students who were about 30 were returning from a rice farm with their head teacher.

While nine perished others managed to swim to safety. So far seven bodies have been retrieved from the river and their bodies released to their respective families for burial after police report was filed.

The candidates were set to sit for the upcoming BECE beginning Monday, November 15.
