Former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (rtd) and former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings have sent out felicitations to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu and the entire Muslim community for a successful completion of their month-long fasting.
“Nana and I congratulate National Chief Imam Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu and the entire Muslim community on the successful conclusion of the sacrificial month of fasting.”
This year’s celebration was devoid of the usual congregation of Muslims at various communities to offer prayers and later to celebrate the successful conclusion of the month of fasting with get-togethers owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing protocol and government’s subsequent ban on religious gatherings.
The former first couple of the republic praised Muslims for their adherence to the safety measures put in place by government to help contain and control the spread of the virus.
“We commend the Muslim community for their commitment to the protocols instituted by government to stem the spread of Covid-19.”
According to the release, the former first couple also called on Muslims to continue to strictly abide by the social distancing and hygiene protocols in order to help combat the Covid-19 health crisis.
“We also urge all Muslims to endeavour to adhere strictly to the social distancing and hygiene protocols as we celebrate, so we can combat this crisis together.” the statement said.
Eid ul fitr is an annual Muslim festival marking the end of the fast of Ramadan. The celebration is usually characterised by Eid prayers, charity, social gatherings, festive meals and gift-giving.
