Success is Intentional

Success in any field of human endeavour, whether in sports, the academia, ministry, family, business etc. does not happen by chance or by accident. It must be planned for; it must be prepared for and diligently worked towards. That means things don’t just happen; you make them happen – deliberately. You must decide to succeed!

While many good things can happen to you and for you along the path of life without your direct involvement or without you necessarily preparing for them or doing anything, the best and most important things won’t come to you without any efforts on your part. You’ve got to first do something about it. You’ll need to think up a strategy and then excute that that plan. You’ll have to organise yourself for it.

You would have to apply the principles of success that God’s Word instructs in Joshua chapter 1 verse 8.

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Because success is neither accidental nor automatic, first of, we have to have a vision (mental picture) or a purpose founded on the principles of God’s Word and a corresponding action plan to achieve our dreams so that we can be successful in anything in life. This is extremely necessary. We ought to have a sense of direction if we are going to be successful.

In life you are not going to accidentally accomplish your goals. You don’t accidentally have good relationships and you won’t accidentally grow well. You have to have a vision and a plan and then work towards it. To put it bluntly, Success requires hard work!

If you go through life vague, without purpose, just hoping that you will end up at the right place, you may miss your destiny and what you were created for. When we don’t have clear-cut goals and plans in place backed by actions to help us accomplish our dreams and be successful, we are not going to end up at the desired place. And we may miss out on our blessings.

The bible says in the book of Proverbs chapter 16 verse 9 that “A man’s mind (heart) plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure.”

This verse also underscores the importance of making plans to succeed.

However, it also makes a clear role differentiation between man and God.

We are expected to plan, but for those plans to come to pass, we must trust and depend on God for direction. Planning is important. Vision and purpose are necessary.

However, direction is essential for accomplishment and success in life. Proverbs 16:9 says that the Lord directs man’s steps and makes them sure. That is saying God leads us and guides us to success.

Direction involves the specific steps and pattern required to follow for success. And that is what God provides when we depend on Him. And so there is the need for us to study God’s Word regularly as we are enjoined in the Joshua 1:8; it is the compass to help us navigate our way through the maze of life to success.

Planning is essential for success because when we don’t make plans, when we don’t have a vision it becomes very easy for us to be distracted or sidetracked and easy to lose our focus.

God had a plan for the universe. Noah had a plan for the ark. Solomon had a plan for the temple. Nehemiah had a plan for the wall.

We also, have to have a plan for our lives and everything we are responsible for or want to do if we are going to be successful.

Friends, success in life is not accidental, success is intentional!
