Zesco United of Zambia were crowned 2020/2021 Zambian league champions after beating Napsa Stars 2-0 in the FAZ/MTN Super League.
The Ndola club won the FAZ Super League title for the ninth time following the home victory at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium.
Zesco on Sunday reached an incontestable 64 points to clinch the league title with three games to spare.
Kenya international striker Jesse Were put ZESCO ahead in the 41st minute to score his 101 competitive goal at Zesco since joining the Ndola club in 2016.
Chipolopolo Zambia midfielder Kelvin Mubanga completed the victory with a long-range shot in the 80th minute to dispatch relegation battling NAPSA to their sixth successive league loss, with two games left for them to avoid demotion.
Zesco are now the joint second most successful Zambian club, tied with ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers after accomplishing that feat in a space of fifteen years.
The club is now four titles shy of record champions and their predecessors Nkana, who have struggled throughout this season and are currently fighting relegation at the opposite end of the table.
Zesco’s league win also marked a memorable first season in charge for coach Mumamba Numba following his appointment last September, after George Lwandamina stepped down when the club relinquished the league title to Nkana at the end of the 2019/2020 campaign.
Numba attributed the victory to Zesco’s ten-match winning run they enjoyed from February to early May as a key factor in their successful title race.
“We are very happy that we have managed to lift the championship. I think it has been quite a competitive season but we made a difference in the ten-game unbeaten run and today we have been confirmed as the 2020/2021 league champions,” Numba said.
This is Numba’s second Zambian league title as coach after leading Zanaco to the 2016 crown.
Zesco, who are eleven points ahead of second placed Zanaco, will be one of Zambia’s two representatives in the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
The other spot, including the two TotalEngeries CAF Confederation Cup slots, are still up for grabs with Zanaco and four other teams jostling to join Zesco as Zambia’s continental representatives next season.
